2026 World Cup: France Alone Atop Oddsboard After Spain's Shocking Draw

The biggest sporting event North America has ever hosted is in full swing, and we already have a new favorite atop the 2026 FIFA World Cup oddsboard.

In a shocking turn of events on Monday, Spain, who came into its match as the -1500 favorites, shockingly had to settle for a draw against Cape Verde in its World Cup opener.

Spain sits second in the FIFA World Rankings, while Cape Verde is 67th. The 65-place gap marks the fourth-largest ranking disparity ever overcome by an underdog that managed to either win or draw a World Cup match since the FIFA rankings were introduced in 1992.

Spain attempted 27 shots against Cape Verde, its highest tally in a World Cup match since 1966. However, they were unable to score a single goal.

Ever since the World Cup odds came out in December, Spain has been the favorite.

Now, after its disappointing draw, they have dropped from +450 to +500.

As a result, France has overtaken Spain and stands alone as the favorite to win the World Cup, with odds of +420 to lift the trophy.

Here’s what to know about this oddsboard:

The Favorites: France is now the solo favorites atop the oddsboard. They will open their pursuit for a third World Cup title on Tuesday against Senegal.

While Spain’s opening draw against Cape Verde was a nightmare start to their tournament, they remain the second choice at +500. Spain has appeared in 16 previous World Cups and won the tournament once, lifting the trophy in 2010. It also won the 2024 Euros. They will look to bounce back and follow suit of Argentina’s route to the title in 2022 after its disappointing first result of the tournament.

Biggest Risers: Could the USA and Mexico have gotten off to better starts? The U.S. took a 3-0 lead over Paraguay in the first half before cruising to a 4-1 win, while Mexico opened up the tournament with a 2-0 win over South Africa. Leading the way for the United States was Falorin Balogun, who scored twice. However, Mauricio Pochettino took USA star Christian Pulisic out at halftime due to calf tightness. The host nations have been two of the biggest risers up the oddsboard during the first week of the tournament.
