2026 World Cup Golden Boot Odds: Messi Favored, Haaland Surges

Two things have undoubtedly been true this summer: The superstars are shining, and the Golden Boot odds seem to be changing every minute.

After coming into Argentina’s final group game against Jordan in the 60th minute, it took very little time for Lionel Messi to put one in the back of the net. Messi’s 80th minute free kick gave him his sixth goal of the tournament, setting the record for most consecutive matches with a goal in the World Cup (7).

Messi is now up to 19 career World Cup goals, extending his record for the most by any man or woman in World Cup history.

Messi remains the clear favorite to win the award at -115.

On Tuesday, Erling Haaland scored his fifth goal of the tournament, tapping one into the back of the net in the 86th minute of Norway’s 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast. Haaland’s game-winning goal has set up a marquee matchup with Brazil on Sunday in the Round of 16.

Haaland now only sits one goal behind Messi in the Golden Boot goal standings, and, as a result, his odds have climbed from +2200 to +1200.

Let’s dive into the updated Golden Boot odds at FanDuel Sportsbook as of June 30.

Here’s what to know about this oddsboard:

The Tally: Messi has the most goals this tournament with six, Haaland has five, while Mbappé, Dembélé, and Vini Jr. are tied in second with four.

Dembélé Arrives: The reigning Ballon d’Or winner made his presence felt on Friday, solidifying why France is the favorite to win it all. Dembélé’s first-half hat trick was the second-quickest hat trick in tournament history, accomplishing the feat in just 32 minutes. Austria’s Erich Probst did it in 24 minutes way back in the 1954 World Cup. Dembélé is the third player to score a hat-trick for France at a men’s World Cup, after Just Fontaine (twice in 1958) and Kylian Mbappé (once in 2022).

History Made: With his hat trick against Algeria, Messi tied Miroslav Klose for the most goals in men’s World Cup history with 16, while also setting the record as the oldest player (38) to record a hat trick, passing Cristiano Ronaldo. Then, in Argentina’s second game against Austria, Messi scored twice to put some space between himself and Klose. Finally, after coming on as a sub in the second half of Argentina’s last group stage match against Jordan, Messi added another, this time via a lovely free kick. Mbappé, with his offensive performance so far this tournament, now has 16 career World Cup goals, tying Klose for the second-most in men’s World Cup history.
