2026 World Cup Odds: Spain, England Surge After Round Of 16 Wins

The knockout stage never disappoints, and it doesn’t appear like it will at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Spain emerged victorious from a matchup between two top five teams in the FIFA rankings, taking down Portugal 1-0 on a stoppage time (90’+1) goal from Mikel Merino.

Spain gets back to the quarterfinals for the first time since its championship run in 2010. It is now unbeaten in 35 straight games (26-9-0, W-D-L) since March 2024, tying the longest undefeated run in team history (also had a 35-game streak snapped by the U.S. in the 2009 Confederations Cup semifinals).

With the win, Spain has still yet to allow a goal in this tournament, and as a result, its odds to win the World Cup have surged from +550 to +350, only trailing France at +175.

Spain will face the winner of the USA vs. Belgium match in the quarterfinals.

On Sunday, in one of the best games of the entire tournament, a 10-man England squad held on to hand Mexico its first competitive home loss since 2013. England has now made three straight quarterfinals at the World Cup for the first time since doing so from 1962-1970.

Norway and England will meet in the quarterfinals on Saturday, with a trip to the semifinals on the line.

Here’s what to know about this oddsboard:

The Favorites: France beat Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32, and then defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16, in what was a more hotly-contested match than people anticipated. France is outscoring opponents 14-2 so far this tournament, and all three of its superstars — Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise — have already made their marks. Morocco is next for France in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Argentina narrowly avoided one of the biggest upsets in tournament history on Friday against Cape Verde. Entering the match, Cape Verde was ranked 67th in the FIFA World Rankings, while Argentina sat first. The 66-place gap would have been the biggest knockout-stage upset by FIFA ranking since the rankings were introduced. Argentina will face Egypt on Tuesday in the Round of 16.

Potential Paths: In a bracket-style tournament like the World Cup, some of it comes down to who you are and some of it comes down to who you face. Assuming it continues its dominance, France’s path to the semifinals would require a win over Morocco. For Argentina, for it to make it to the semifinals, it would now need to beat Egypt, and then the winner of Switzerland vs. Colombia. Argentina will be favored heavily in any of those potential matches as well. In terms of the USA, after its Round of 32 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, it will need wins over Belgium and then Spain to make the semis, where it would presumably face France.
