For the first time ever, the United States, Mexico and Canada are co-hosting the 48-team tournament, which kicked off with Mexico’s 2-0 victory over South Africa. All 48 nations entered the competition with one goal in mind: lifting the iconic World Cup trophy.<\/p>\n
Here’s a look at some fun fan moments, along with an overview of the most notable news surrounding the World Cup.<\/p>\n
Life is a circle.<\/p>\n
In appearing on the pitch for New Zealand’s June 15 draw against Iran, defender Tyler Bindon made himself and Jenny Bindon, his mom, the first mother and son to each appear in a World Cup.<\/p>\n
Jenny Bindon, who made 77 appearances in the net for New Zealand, was a goalkeeper for New Zealand’s women’s national soccer team in the 2007 and 2011 World Cups.<\/p>\n
As for the 21-year-old Bindon, he spent last season on loan at Sheffield United in the English Championship, but he’s signed to Nottingham Forest (Premier League).<\/p>\n
England full back Tino Livramento was ruled out of the World Cup on Tuesday because of a calf injury, forcing coach Thomas Tuchel into a late squad change ahead of his team’s opening game against Croatia.<\/p>\n
Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah was called up as a replacement and is due to head to the England training camp in Kansas City.<\/p>\n
The English Football Association said Newcastle defender Livramento was injured during training on Sunday.<\/p>\n
“A subsequent scan and medical assessment on Monday unfortunately confirmed he could play no further part in England\u2019s tournament,” it said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Livramento was selected largely for his versatility, as he was comfortable at right back and left back. He was chiefly seen as the backup to the injury-prone Reece James at right back.<\/p>\n

England is heading for Dallas for its first group game against Croatia on Wednesday. Teams can call up injury replacements up to 24 hours before the kickoff of their first game.<\/p>\n
Tunisia has fired coach Sabri Lamouchi after being thrashed 5-1 by Sweden in its first match at the World Cup and appointed French coach Herv\u00e9 Renard. The 54-year-old Lamouchi had been in charge only since January.<\/p>\n
Renard’s deal covers only the World Cup and a longer-term agreement will be discussed after that, the Tunisian soccer federation said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Renard is an experienced coach who specializes in leading national teams across Africa and the Arabic-speaking world. He’s won the Africa Cup of Nations with Zambia and the Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n

Spain went even earlier at the 2018 World Cup, firing Julen Lopetegui two days before its first group game \u2014 against Portugal \u2014 after he was announced as the next Real Madrid coach for the following season.<\/p>\n

Tunisia\u2019s heavy loss on Sunday left the North African nation with a tough task to reach the last 32. Brazil forward Neymar is reportedly looking at more time on the sideline, according to a report by ESPN.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Despite dealing with injuries, the 34-year-old Neymar was still called up to the 26-man squad for the World Cup. He sat out Brazil’s 1-1 draw against Morocco on Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Neymar is the all-time men’s leading scorer in Brazil’s history, as well as having the mark for most appearances.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Canada captain Alphonso Davies remained limited in the team’s World Cup training session on Monday as he recovers from a hamstring injury.<\/p>\n
Davies warmed up with the team at Canada’s training base but remained in return to play protocol ahead of the co-host’s second group match on Thursday against Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver.<\/p>\n
The left back injured a hamstring last month while playing for Bayern Munich in a 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain that knocked the German club out of the Champions League semifinals.<\/p>\n
Davies has not played for Canada since March 2025, when he tore an ACL in the CONCACAF Nations League finals. He has 15 goals in 58 games for Canada.<\/p>\n
Canada opened the World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday in Toronto. Late substitute Cyle Larin scored an equalizer for the Canadians in the 78th minute.<\/p>\n
Qatar pulled off an unexpected 1-1 draw with Switzerland on Saturday in Santa Clara, California. Boualem Khoukhi scored for Qatar in stoppage time for the nation’s first-ever World Cup point.<\/p>\n
The results in the opening games kept Group B tight, with each team having one point heading into their second matches.<\/p>\n
“We know the group is wide open,” defender Joel Waterman said after practice. “Obviously, we’re looking at the standings and the top two teams make it through. We want to be one of those top two teams, right? So the group is still wide open. Every game is going to be difficult. Qatar is going to be very difficult and obviously Switzerland to finish the group out, so we’re looking for two wins.”<\/p>\n
Canada is training at the National Soccer Development Centre at the University of British Columbia. The facility is the training home of Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps.<\/p>\n

The 40-year-old enters the World Cup having not played for Germany in almost two years after coach Julian Nagelsmann lured him out of international retirement.<\/p>\n

T\u00fcrkiye is back in the World Cup<\/u> for the first time since 2002 and, despite the long absence, captain Hakan Calhanoglu has made some bulletin-board worthy comments about his team\u2019s first opponent.<\/p>\n
“I think we will dominate (Saturday), the game, because we have more qualities and a more talented team,” Calhanoglu said Friday of Australia, T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s opponent at BC Place. “So we will see (Saturday) what happens.”<\/p>\n
T\u00fcrkiye has had its share of continental success throughout much of this century but did not qualify for the past five World Cups. Australia is playing in its sixth consecutive World Cup and advanced to the knockout stage in Qatar in 2022.<\/p>\n
“He\u2019s allowed to have his own opinion,” Australia midfielder Aiden O\u2019Neill said Friday about Calhanoglu\u2019s comments. “We\u2019ve got quality players on our team, too, so we\u2019re ready.”<\/p>\n

Australia coach Tony Popovic has signed a contract extension through early 2027 on the eve of his team’s World Cup opening match against T\u00fcrkiye on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Football Australia said Friday that the 52-year-old Popovic’s deal now extends through the Asian Cup, which will take place in January and early February in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n
The former Australia international was hired in September 2024 and led the Socceroos to qualification for the 48-team tournament.<\/p>\n

Endo has played for the Japan national team for over a decade, where he made 73 appearances and scored four goals. As a veteran anchor in the midfield, Endo has also served as Japan’s captain since their previous World Cup in 2022, where they reached the Round of 16.\u00a0<\/p>\n
As for Endo’s professional career, he first played for Shanon Bellmare from 2010-15, followed by the Urawa Red Diamonds from 2016-19, VfB Stuttgart from 2019-23 and has played for Liverpool FC since 2023. With Liverpool, Endo played a prominent role in the team’s Carabao Cup victory in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n
With Endo out, Japan has officially called Borussia M\u00f6nchengladbach midfielder Shuto Machino to join the 26-man roster. Machino is entering his second World Cup and his fifth year with the Japan national team.<\/p>\n
Following the injury of defender Leonardo Balerdi, Argentina has officially called up defender Marcos Senesi to the 26-man roster. Argentina is set to open their World Cup campaign on June 16 against Algeria.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Senesi has been training prior in case of a last-minute call-up, and was named to the roster after Balerdi’s muscle injury was ruled out. Senesi has played professionally since 2016, playing for clubs like San Lorenzo, Feyenoord, AFC Bournemouth and is currently with Tottenham Hotspur.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Joining Senesi in the back are defenders Lisandro Mart\u00ednez, Nicol\u00e1s Otamendi and Cristian Romero.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In what’s likely to be Lionel Messi’s last World Cup, Argentina will look to repeat their historic 2022 World Cup win this tournament.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Tyler Adams, United States’ midfielder, is a fan of the National Basketball Association’s New York Knicks. The Knicks are in the NBA Finals, on the eve of the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, so members of the United States’ squad gathered together to watch what turned out to be the largest NBA Finals comeback in history, with the Knicks coming out on top.<\/p>\n
When New York won, the room erupted, with Adams especially going wild. And we know this because the reaction was caught on camera in the moment.<\/p>\n

FIFA confirmed late Wednesday that former Barcelona player Ezzalzouli and Marseille defender Nayef Aguerd were withdrawn from the Morocco squad for the tournament.<\/p>\n
Ezzalzouli helped Real Betis qualify for next season’s Champions League and was a potential breakout star at the World Cup. Aguerd was a cornerstone of Morocco\u2019s historic semifinals team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.<\/p>\n
